Postdoctoral Scholars

There are a number of routes for postdocs entering our lab. Most commonly, if I have a funded grant I will typically advertise the position on Twitter (@mykophile), the Mycological Society of America (MSA) Jobs Board, the Ecological Society of America (ESA) Physiological Ecology Jobs Board, and the International Society of Microbial Ecology (ISME) Jobs Board. Applications are reviewed by myself and 1-2 lab members and scored based a number of criteria. While these criteria may vary based on the specific position, they commonly include evaluations of laboratory & molecular skills, data analysis & bioinformatics, writing ability, field skills, theory or background knowledge in the specific area of work, and contributions to diversity (broadly defined). The top ranking candidates are invited to give a research seminar in our lab and interview with lab members. For candidates that are hired to work on a specific grant we will have an orientation to discuss responsibilities and project scope related to the funding source. However, I also expect that postdocs in the lab will have flexibility in adapting projects to suit their interests and expertise and encourage the development of additional independent projects for those interested. I also expect that postdocs on funded grants will lead the publications for project that they are working on. 

In addition, I am always open to supporting candidates interested in applying for external fellowships that would support their time in our lab. A few possible options are the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology, NOAA Climate &Global Change fellowship,  Life Sciences Research Foundation postdoctoral program.
